Ski bums, powder puffs, snow angels and every other type of ski and snowboarding enthusiast in Steamboat is rejoicing today over a record 27″ of Champagne Powder snow that fell in the last 24 hours at the Steamboat Ski Resort, 24 of which fell after the ski area closed, and another 5 inches fell between 5am and 11am today – bringing the 30 hour snow total to 34 inches. This afternoon, the clouds have parted and sun is streaming on the ski area. It is a magical and memorable powder day! Yeeeeeeeee haaaaaaaw!!!
The Steamboat Pilot reported that “Monday broke Mount Werner’s previous record of 26 inches in 24 hours on Jan. 31, 1996. The ski area received 24 inches in 24 hours on Jan. 23, 1996.”
The ski area is now reporting 5 feet of snow at mid-mountain so far in February, and 6 feet at the summit. The mid-mountain base is now 75 inches, with an 82-inch base at the summit.
While tearing up the powder today (which was so deep it filled in behind me – so there’s plenty to go around…) I overhead lots of great comments! One man remarked “Geez. There’s a lot of snow!” A lot? I have skied 12 seasons in the boat and this was by far the deepest!
Through the whooping and hollering, the yee haw-ing and woo-hoo’s, I saw one tall teenage boy emerge from a wave of snow (yep! Face shots galore!), crying (with joy, I hope) “I can’t breathe!” Perhaps he should have copied one girl in the lift line who actually wore a snorkel!
Peruse any Steamboat local’s Facebook page and you will see that there’s as many comments about this epic powder day as there is snow. OK, since you can’t get into all of our accounts, we’ll bring you some of the comments, photos and videos right here:
Grant Lamont: you need to breath through your ears.
Heather Vincent: That I couldn’t go to work.
Carrie Panama Requist: I was getting face shots on the side of westside After Lunch!!!
For all of you out there that were waiting for snow to make reservations to come visit Steamboat, the wait is over! The rest of the week calls for snow through Friday as well. Come on all you powder hounds, give us a call and let us help you find the luxury lodging accommodation of your choice!
Who wants some Champagne Powder?!
